In a historic night at the 2025 Oscars, Sean Baker’s dramedy Anora dominated the awards ceremony, making Baker the first filmmaker to win four major Oscars for a single film, taking home Best Original Screenplay, Best Editing, Best Director, and Best Picture.
Hosted by Conan O’Brien, the ceremony saw Emilia Pérez enter with the highest stakes, having received 13 nominations. While Zoe Saldana claimed the Best Supporting Actress award for her performance in Emilia Pérez, it was Anora that amassed the evening’s most prestigious honors.
To no one’s surprise (at least not mine), the 2025 Oscars continued a pattern of disconnect between Academy voters and general audiences. The selection of Anora over Dune: Part Two for Best Picture is once again proof of the Oscars’ traditional bias toward smaller, lesser-known films over blockbusters, particularly in the sci-fi and fantasy genres.
Denis Villeneuve’s absence from the Best Director category for Dune: Part Two, which is widely considered one of 2024’s strongest cinematic achievements, follows a long history of Academy Award snubs.
Not too long ago, Toni Collette’s phenomenal performance in Hereditary was completely overlooked. More recently, Matt Reeves’ The Batman failed to receive any nods in the Cinematography category, an oversight that still shocks me to this day.
This persistent gap between Oscar recognition and audience preference is why the Oscars have been losing merit, year after year. Despite big films driving theatrical attendance (especially now in the post-pandemic era), their consistent underrepresentation at the Oscars has left many, including myself, feeling that the awards no longer reflect the cinematic experiences of audiences.
Anyhow, the 2025 Oscars ceremony caps off a lengthy awards season that included controversial social media revelations about Karla Sofía Gascón’s racial sentiments and memorable acceptance speeches, thanks to Kieran Culkin.
