Activision’s Raven Software has given fans an electrifying glimpse into the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 campaign at Gamescom Opening Night Live. The extended gameplay reveal showcased a mission called “Most Wanted,” which takes place amid a political fundraiser in Washington D.C.
Set in the 1990s as the Cold War draws to a close, Black Ops 6 promises to deliver a mind-bending conspiracy on a global scale. The trailer introduces us to a mix of familiar faces and new operatives, with franchise veterans Frank Woods and Russell Adler returning as newcomers Troy Marshall and Jane Harrow join them.
The “Most Wanted” mission follows the player character, known as “Case,” as they attempt to rescue Russell Adler from a CIA black site hidden beneath Capitol Station. The level showcases the game’s emphasis on player choice, offering multiple approaches to objectives. Players can choose between stealthy infiltration or all-out assault, with the mission structure allowing for flexibility in tactics.
New gameplay mechanics were on full display, including “Omnimovement,” which allows players to sprint, slide, and dive in any direction. The trailer also highlighted new equipment like the Disruptor, a throwable device that stuns enemies, and the Homing Knife, an explosive blade that can be steered mid-flight.
Raven Software devs Katherine Anderson and Jon Zuck emphasized that the campaign will feature “blockbuster action where players question everything and trust no one.” The story appears to delve deeper into character motivations and backstories, hinting at a more nuanced narrative compared to previous titles. Given how long-time fans feel about the franchise, we can only hope that Black Ops 6 won’t be another disappointing entry.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 is set to launch on October 25 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam. The open beta will start on September 6. However, Xbox Game Pass owners can play the open beta early, with no purchase required, from August 30 to September 9.
