Cosplay Is Not Consent: Dos and Don’ts of Cosplay Etiquette

Learn the simple dos and don'ts of cosplay etiquette.

It’s no secret that cosplay has rapidly become a beloved pastime for fans across the world. If you’ve had a chance to dip your toe in this world, you’ve likely experienced the vibrant, creative community that brings joy to both cosplayers and admirers alike. However, as with any social activity, there are some important rules that need to be followed to ensure everyone gets the best out of it. Welcome to the dos and don’ts of cosplay etiquette!

The Golden Rule: Cosplay Is Not Consent

First things first: let’s talk about the phrase that’s been making waves in the cosplay community for years now: “Cosplay is not consent.” This powerful statement is a reminder to all that wearing a costume, no matter how revealing or elaborate, does not give anyone permission to touch, harass, or disrespect the cosplayer.

Cosplayers invest tremendous time, effort, and often money into their costumes. They do it for the love of the character and the joy of bringing that character to life. The last thing they want is to feel uncomfortable or unsafe while enjoying their passion.

1. Respect Personal Space

Imagine you’re dressed as your favorite superhero (or villain – whatever floats your boat), and you’re in the middle of haggling with a booth seller or vendor at a convention. Suddenly, someone interrupts to ask for a photo. It’s annoying, right? Always be mindful of a cosplayer’s personal space and current activity. If they’re eating, resting, or engaged in conversation, it’s best to wait for a more appropriate moment to approach them.

2. Hands Off the Costume!

Props, wigs, and costumes are often delicate and can be easily damaged. Plus, touching someone without their permission is a big no-no, costume or not. Treat a cosplayer’s outfit like a piece of art in a museum—admire with your eyes, not your hands!

3. Ask Before You Snap

Found a cosplayer with an amazing costume? Fantastic! But before you start snapping photos, remember to ask for permission. A simple “Hey, can I take a photo with you?” goes a long way. Not only is it respectful, but it also gives the cosplayer a chance to strike their best pose!

4. Mind Your Language

Keep it family-friendly, folks! Use appropriate language when interacting with cosplayers. Avoid profanity, insults, or any form of body-shaming. Remember, cosplay is for everyone, regardless of body type, gender, or age.

Body shaming has no place in the world of cosplay.

5. No Means No

If a cosplayer declines a photo or any other request, respect their decision. Don’t push or try to convince them otherwise. They might be tired, in a hurry, or simply not in the mood. And that’s okay!

6. Be Mindful of Body Language

Sometimes, a cosplayer might not verbally say no, but their body language might indicate discomfort. If you notice hesitation or see them leaning away, it’s best to back off and respect their boundaries. Don’t be that guy who can’t read the room.

7. Keep It PG

Cosplay events are often family-friendly, so keep your behavior and comments appropriate. This means no sexually charged comments or below-the-belt jokes, even if you think they’re harmless.

8. Follow Convention Rules

Every cosplay convention has its own set of rules. Make sure you familiarize yourself with these guidelines before attending. They’re put in place to ensure everyone’s safety and enjoyment.

What If You See Inappropriate Behavior?

If you witness someone violating these etiquette rules or making a cosplayer uncomfortable, don’t be a bystander. Speak up! Let the person know their behavior is not acceptable, and if necessary, report the incident to convention staff. Don’t let bullies ruin the experience for everyone else.

When we all follow cosplay etiquette, cosplay events become magical experiences for everyone involved. Cosplayers can freely express their creativity and passion, while admirers can appreciate the incredible artistry on display.

After all, behind every costume is a real person with feelings. Treat them with the same respect and kindness you’d want for yourself. Following this simple cosplay etiquette can ensure that the world of cosplay remains a positive, inclusive, and downright fun place for all!
