Thank heavens, fans of the hilarious diving comedy Grand Blue Dreaming can finally come up for air! After a long, six-year hiatus, the series is set to make a splash with its second season.
It’s been a patient wait for many since the first season aired back in 2018, but no more. The production teams at ZERO-G and Liber dropped the announcement on social media, catching many off guard with a reveal that initially seemed too good to be true. A teaser accompanied the announcement, giving fans their first glimpse of what’s to come.
More good news is that much of the original team is coming back for the second season. Shinji Takamatsu is returning to the director’s chair while also taking on scriptwriting and sound direction duties.
Hideoki Kusama will once again be overseeing character designs and serving as chief animation director. The entire main voice cast from the first season will also reprise their roles, ensuring that the characters we’ve come to love will sound just as we remember them.
For those unfamiliar with the series, Grand Blue Dreaming follows the misadventures of Iori Kitahara as he begins his college life in the seaside town of Izu. What starts as a quest for a fresh start and romantic possibilities quickly descends into chaos when Iori joins the local diving club, a group more interested in drinking than diving.
While an exact release date is still under wraps, we do have some hints about what the new season might bring. The story is expected to pick up where the first season left off, with main character Iori Kitahara returning to Izu after completing his diving license training in Okinawa.
We also know that a letter from Iori’s younger sister, Shiori, is set to shake things up. Given the series’ reputation for outrageous comedy and alcohol-fueled antics, it’s safe to say that whatever comes next will be anything but smooth sailing.
To commemorate the production announcement, NBCUniversal is offering fans a chance to revisit or discover the series for the first time. The entire first season of Grand Blue Dreaming will be available for free streaming on their YouTube Anime/Music channel from September 29 to October 11.
