Believe it or not, it is finally here! After nearly two years of asking for it following the original reveal, Rockstar Games has finally dropped a new trailer for Grand Theft Auto VI (GTA 6) on Tuesday, May 6, 2025. The second trailer gives us a deeper look into the game’s dual protagonists and confirms the new release date that was announced last week.
The latest trailer (which came out of nowhere) introduces us to Jason, the male protagonist previously shown in the first reveal. The trailer opens with Jason picking up Lucia from prison, establishing their relationship as central to the game’s narrative.
According to story details released alongside the trailer, Jason grew up surrounded by “grifters and crooks” and attempted to escape his troubled past with a stint in the Army. Eventually finding himself working for drug runners in the Keys, Jason’s life takes a turn when he meets Lucia.
Lucia, meanwhile, was raised fighting from an early age. Her attempts to protect her family landed her in the Leonida Penitentiary, but “sheer luck” secured her release. Fresh out of prison, she’s determined to create the good life her mother dreamed of since their days in Liberty City, and she’s willing to do whatever it takes.
While previous games set in Vice City transported players to the neon-soaked 1980s, GTA 6 brings the beloved location into the modern era. The game takes place in the fictional state of Leonida, with Vice City as its centerpiece.
Despite the modern setting, the trailer features some nostalgic ’80s music, with Hot Together by The Pointer Sisters playing throughout, paying homage to the series’ history while establishing its new direction. There are also some old characters featured in the trailer, including Phil Cassidy, a major character in GTA: Vice City.
Rockstar Games describes the GTA 6‘s narrative arc as follows:
Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them. But when an easy score goes wrong, they find themselves on the darkest side of the sunniest place in America, in the middle of a conspiracy stretching across the state of Leonida – forced to rely on each other more than ever if they want to make it out alive.
This suggests the upcoming title will follow the pair as they wade through the criminal underworld of Leonida, potentially rising through the ranks while contending with larger forces at play.
Last week, Rockstar disappointed a lot of eager fans (including myself) after announcing that GTA 6 would be delayed to May 26, 2026. Rockstar explained that it needs “extra time to deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two, supported the decision, stating, “We support fully Rockstar Games taking additional time to realize their creative vision for Grand Theft Auto VI, which promises to be a ground-breaking, blockbuster entertainment experience that exceeds audience expectations.”
Recent reports also suggest that Rockstar employees had doubts about hitting the 2025 release date even before the official delay announcement. The move may now prompt other publishers to announce their own 2025 releases, as many had allegedly been waiting to see if they would need to avoid competing directly with GTA 6.
Releasing the GTA 6 second trailer now will certainly help calm the millions of fans who’ve been waiting for the next entry in the GTA mainline series for 12 years.
GTA 6 is currently confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, with the latest trailer captured on PS5 hardware. There is no news yet on a PC release.
