In an unsurprising move, HBO has fanned the flames of the Targaryen dynasty by officially ordering a third season of the acclaimed Game of Thrones prequel series, House of the Dragon. The renewal announcement arrived just days before the highly anticipated second season premiere on June 16.
“The Dance of the Dragons continues,” House of the Dragon‘s official account tweeted, referring to the iconic civil war that will likely unfold over the next couple of seasons as the show chronicles the bitter feud between Rhaenyra and Aegon II for the Iron Throne.
While unexpected to none, the renewal of House of the Dragon Season 3 solidifies the status of the acclaimed series as a crown jewel in the network’s fantasy empire. Alongside the blockbuster video game adaptation The Last of Us, the Game of Thrones universe has continued to scorch viewership records.

“We are in awe of the dragon-sized effort the entire team has put into the creation of a spectacular season two, with a scope and scale that is only rivaled by its heart,” said Francesca Orsi, HBO’s Programming Executive Vice President. She teased that season 3 will surely “continue the story of House Targaryen and watch this team burn bright again.”
Indeed, the creatives have grand ambitions for the fantasy universe. Series co-creator Ryan Condal previously revealed aspirations spanning 4 seasons or more to fully realize George R.R. Martin’s rich Targaryen historical canon. The famed author himself stoked excitement by announcing HBO’s resurrection of the scrapped 10,000 Ships prequel for another pilot attempt.
Not merely content with reigning over Westeros, HBO is rapidly expanding its dragonverse. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms spinoff is set to soar in 2025, while another is taking wing from Project Power‘s scriptwriter, Mattson Tomlin, delving into the conquering days of the legendary Aegon the Conqueror.
