The first trailer for Love Hurts has arrived, showcasing Oscar winner Ke Huy Quan in a role that feels both wonderfully familiar and refreshingly new. From 87North, the production company behind action hits like John Wick, Nobody, and Bullet Train, comes a story about a mild-mannered realtor with a deadly past he can’t quite escape.
Quan stars as Marvin Gable, a Milwaukee suburbs real estate agent whose expertise apparently extends beyond closing deals to closing windpipes, haha! His peaceful life selling homes is upended when he receives a crimson envelope from Rose (fellow Oscar winner Ariana DeBose), a former partner-in-crime he’d left for dead.
The trailer, set to Celine Dion’s track “It’s All Coming Back To Me Now,” reveals that Marvin’s past is about to catch up with him in explosive fashion, particularly when his crime lord brother Knuckles (played by Daniel Wu) enters the picture.
The upcoming film will be an exciting milestone as Quan’s first leading role since his triumphant return to Hollywood in Everything Everywhere All at Once. While he’s appeared in Loki Season 2 and lent his voice to Kung Fu Panda 4, Love Hurts puts him front and center in an action-packed thriller that seems perfectly tailored to his unique style of unassuming charm and impressive physical prowess, skills he honed during his time as a fight and stunt coordinator.
Behind the camera, Love Hurts will showcase another exciting trend in action cinema: stunt professionals stepping into the director’s chair. The film will be the directorial debut of JoJo Eusebio, whose stunt work includes Deadpool 2, Birds of Prey, and The Avengers. He follows in the footsteps of other stunt coordinators-turned-directors like John Wick filmmakers David Leitch and Chad Stahelski.
The supporting cast includes Lord of the Rings Sean Astin, Our Flag Means Death star Rhys Darby, and NFL star-turned-actor Marshawn Lynch. Love Hurts will land in theaters on February 7 next year, just in time for an action-packed Valentine’s Day date night.
