Batman and The Punisher teaming up as Nine Inch Nails plays in the background was not on my bingo card for 2025, yet, here we are. The first trailer for The Accountant 2, the long-awaited sequel to the 2016 film, has arrived, bringing back Ben Affleck as Christian Wolff, the autistic mathematical genius with a very particular set of skills.
The trailer opens with a lighter moment, featuring Wolff consulting with Justine (his autistic partner) about the nuances between dressy casual and business casual attire, which is somewhat funny when you consider Affleck’s questionable fashion choices.
However, the mood quickly turns dark when it’s revealed that Treasury Director Ray King (played by J.K. Simmons) has been murdered, leaving behind a cryptic message: “Find the accountant.”
This sets up the core premise, as Treasury Deputy Director Marybeth Medina (played by Cynthia Addai-Robinson) reluctantly seeks out Wolff’s help to unravel the conspiracy behind King’s death. You quickly get the feeling that this alliance will not be smooth sailing as Medina doesn’t miss the chance to remind Wolff of his questionable client list—drug cartels and the mob.
Thankfully, The Accountant 2 will also be bringing back Jon Bernthal as Wolff’s estranged brother Braxton. His tendency to dispatch his enemies with extreme prejudice will only make things far more difficult for Wolff and Medina by extension.
Though familiar faces like Affleck, Bernthal, and Addai-Robinson return, some big names, including Anna Kendrick, Jeffrey Tambor, and Jean Smart, will not reprise their roles.
Fortunately, the creative team behind the original will return with Gavin O’Connor directing and Bill Dubuque penning the screenplay. This time, Affleck is also involved as a producer through his Artists Equity company.
The original film proved to be a surprise hit, earning $155 million globally on a $44 million budget, and has recently found new life as a streaming success on Netflix.
The Accountant 2 will premiere at the 2025 South by Southwest festival before landing in theaters exclusively on April 25, with a Prime Video streaming release to follow at a later date.
